My lunch with Neil

Ever watch a movie called My Dinner With Andre?  It’s a movie made in 1981 that IMDb gives 4 stars to; but I thought it was dreadful.  It was so bad, in fact, that it was one of the two movies in my life that I walked out on.

So in complete contrast I want to tell you about my lunch with L. Neil Smith.

Oh! What a wonderful lunch at IHOP.

If you are not familiar with L. Neil Smith let me tell you that he founded the Prometheus Awards ( ) in 1979 and won the award in 2001.

L. Neil Smith and I are contemporaries.  I’m 63 and he’s 67.  In my late 20s I read his book, The Probability Broach, and it was one of several books that was instrumental in shaping my libertarian philosophy.  If you’ve not read it, I can tell you it is simultaneously profound and a fun read, too.

I had met Mr. Smith in order to twist his arm to attend one or more of our Boulder Libertarian events.  I am so happy to say that he said he is open to the idea.

So why was I so impressed with the lunch?  It was such a pleasure and privilege to have lunch with such a world-class mind; a mind where strong ideas just tumble out like water over Niagara.  Our conversation ranged over gun calibers to the history of warfare in Africa; from the War in Vietnam to the Philosophy of Non-Aggression; and god alone (and maybe Neil) knows what else. I wish I had recorded it.

I intend on reading more of his 30+ books.

I had contacted Neil in an email about a month ago.  I started out by telling him that he had met me for about 30 seconds at a Libertarian Party State Convention a decade ago.

“Oh, I remember you!  You’re the guy with the weird name.”

I am looking for a good ISP.  My current one is giving me grief.  They are nice but they seem to be small and, thus, get blacklisted by other ISPs far too often.

So I’m looking for an ISP that doesn’t get blacklisted and provides cheap or free bulk mail management.  GoDaddy, for instance, charges $10/month for mailing list management.  That’s far more than I want or am able to spend.

Do you know of one?

Term Limits

Alan Rosenfeld’s case against County Commissioner Domenico went to trial.  I was named as one of the “defendants” although “defendant” (according to the judge) is a misnomer.

I submitted my brief on Monday in favor of Mr. Rosenfeld’s (D) position and the judge said he would issue a written ruling by Jan 23.

I want to thank Bryan Griffin for his great legal research and suggestions.  I want to thank Jim Remmert for reading all the pleadings (It certainly is a lot to absorb) and making his usual cogent comments.

You can find my brief here:
